September Checklist: Creating a Healthy Home for Your Indoor Birds

22 Sep 2025

September is a wonderful month. There's a crisp change in the air, and for us, it often signals a fresh start. For our feathered friends, however, this transition from summer to autumn can bring about changes in light, temperature, and even their moods!

As responsible bird owners, this is the perfect time to give their indoor environment a thorough overhaul. A little proactive maintenance now will ensure your pet birds stay happy, healthy, and singing their hearts out throughout the autumn and winter months. Getting your bird environment ready for the cooler season is key to their well-being.

The Autumn Health Check-Up

Your bird's health is the top priority. The change in season can sometimes trigger a moult, meaning your bird needs extra energy and good nutrition.

  • Observe their behaviour. Are they quieter than usual? Are they eating and drinking normally? Any changes should be noted and, if persistent, checked by an avian vet.
  • Feather Quality. A heavy moult means lots of pin feathers and new growth. Ensure they have access to good bathing facilities and an excellent diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support this process.
  • Weight Check. If your bird is comfortable with it, a gentle, regular weight check can indicate any hidden issues before they become serious.

Providing a stable, healthy bird environment is about more than just cleaning; it’s about providing the right resources for seasonal changes.

Cage Cleanliness and Safety

When was the last time you did a deep clean? September is the ideal time to do more than just the daily tidying.

1. The Deep Clean Routine

Take everything out of the cage and give it a good scrub with a bird-safe disinfectant. This includes the bars, the tray, and the surrounding area.

  • Perches: Check for wear and tear. Sandpaper or natural wood perches can harbour bacteria or mites. Scrub them thoroughly and replace any that are cracked or severely worn. Provide a variety of perches of different sizes to promote indoor bird wellness and foot health.
  • Toys: Toys get forgotten! Discard any broken or frayed rope toys and sterilise plastic or metal ones. Rotate their selection to keep them mentally stimulated.
  • Food and Water Bowls: These should be cleaned daily, but now is the time to check for any hidden mould or damage to the ceramic or plastic material. Replace any bowls that are showing signs of wear.

2. Air Quality Matters

As the weather cools, we tend to close windows and turn on central heating. This can significantly reduce air quality for your bird, who has a very sensitive respiratory system.

  • Ventilation: Ensure there is good ventilation without placing the cage in a direct draught. Open a window slightly in an adjacent room if possible.
  • Humidity: Central heating can dry out the air. Consider placing a bird bath or a small humidifier nearby to maintain a comfortable humidity level. This helps with their skin and feathers during a moult.
  • Avoid Toxins: This is a crucial reminder! Never use air fresheners, scented candles, non-stick (PTFE) cookware, or harsh cleaning sprays near your birds. Fumes can be fatal.

Light and Location

Sunlight is vital for vitamin D production, which helps with calcium absorption. As the daylight hours shorten, you might need to adjust the cage’s location.

Move the cage closer to a window to maximise natural light, but remember not to place it in direct, intense sunlight without a shaded area to retreat to. You might also consider investing in a specialised avian UV lamp. This can mimic natural sunlight and is a fantastic way to boost their health during the darker winter months, supporting their overall pet bird care.

By taking these simple steps, you are actively supporting your bird’s health and happiness. A clean, stimulating, and well-lit environment is the best gift you can give your feathered companion this September. Enjoy the autumn!
