Extra Select's Guide to Happy Indoor Birds

24 Mar 2025

As March arrives, bringing the promise of spring, we often think of garden birds singing their hearts out. But what about our feathered friends indoors? Parakeets, canaries, finches, and cockatiels bring their own vibrant chirps and colourful presence into our homes all year round. While they don't face the chill of the outdoors, March is still a fantastic time to review their comfort and well-being, ensuring they're as happy and healthy as possible. At Extra Select, we understand the unique needs of indoor birds and are here to help you provide the best environment for them.

Light, Bright, and Right: Optimising Their Environment

The increasing daylight hours in March are a welcome change for everyone, including your indoor bird. Proper lighting is crucial for their health and mood.

  • Natural Light: Position your bird's cage in a spot that receives natural daylight, but avoid direct, harsh sunlight which can quickly overheat the cage. A bright room with indirect light is ideal.
  • Artificial Lighting: Consider full-spectrum avian lighting. This specially designed light mimics natural sunlight, which is vital for vitamin D synthesis and overall well-being, especially if your bird doesn't get much natural sun exposure. Timers can help regulate their "day" and "night" cycle.
  • Temperature Stability: While the outdoor temperature fluctuates, maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature indoors. Avoid placing cages near drafts, air conditioning units, or heating vents, which can cause sudden temperature changes.

A Spring Clean for Their Cage

Just like we spring clean our homes, March is an excellent time for a thorough cage refresh. A clean environment prevents bacteria build-up and keeps your bird healthy.

  • Deep Clean: Once a month, or more often if needed, remove your bird to a safe temporary cage. Take everything out of their main cage and give it a deep clean using a bird-safe disinfectant. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reassembling.
  • Perch Inspection: Check perches for cleanliness, splinters, or rough spots. Rotate or replace perches regularly to prevent "bumblefoot" and provide variety for their feet. Natural branch perches of varying diameters are excellent.
  • Toy Refresh: Clean existing toys and consider introducing new ones. Rotate toys to keep your bird engaged and prevent boredom. Ensure all toys are safe and bird-friendly.

Nutrition for Peak Performance

A balanced diet is the cornerstone of a happy, singing bird. March is a good time to reassess their nutritional intake, especially as their energy levels might increase with more light.

  • High-Quality Seed Mixes: Provide a premium seed mix specifically formulated for your bird's species. Extra Select offers a range of mixes tailored to the needs of different indoor birds, ensuring they get essential nutrients.
  • Fresh Greens & Veg: Introduce a wider variety of fresh, bird-safe greens and vegetables. Leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, and sweet potato can offer vital vitamins and minerals. Always wash thoroughly and remove any uneaten portions promptly to prevent spoilage.
  • Fruit in Moderation: Small amounts of fresh fruit can be a welcome treat. Always research which fruits are safe for your bird.
  • Mineral Blocks & Cuttlefish: Ensure access to a cuttlefish bone or a mineral block for calcium and trace minerals, crucial for bone health and feather development.
  • Fresh Water: Constant access to clean, fresh water is non-negotiable. Change water daily and clean bowls thoroughly to prevent bacterial growth.

Mental Stimulation: Keeping Minds Active

Boredom can lead to destructive behaviours or stress in indoor birds. March is an ideal time to boost their mental stimulation.

  • Foraging Opportunities: Encourage natural foraging by hiding treats within toys or scattering some seeds in safe foraging trays. This mimics their natural behaviour and keeps them engaged.
  • Variety of Toys: Offer a mix of chew toys, shreddable toys, and puzzle toys. Birds love to destroy things safely!
  • Interaction: Spend time talking to your bird, offering gentle interaction, or playing their favourite music. Even just having them in a room where they can observe family activities can be enriching.
  • Safe Out-of-Cage Time: For appropriate species (and with careful supervision!), allow short periods of safe, out-of-cage flight time in a bird-proofed room. This provides vital exercise.

Monitoring Health and Happiness

With the changing season, keep an extra eye on your bird's overall well-being.

  • Feather Health: Observe their feathers. Are they bright and well-groomed? Excessive plucking or dull feathers can indicate a problem.
  • Appetite and Droppings: Any significant changes in eating habits or the consistency of droppings warrant attention.
  • Activity Levels: Are they chirping, playing, and moving normally? Lethargy or unusual quietness can be a red flag.
  • Regular Vet Check-ups: An annual check-up with an avian vet is highly recommended to catch any potential issues early.

By following these tips, you can ensure your indoor birds enjoy a vibrant and healthy March, chirping happily and adding boundless joy to your home. Extra Select is always here to support you in providing the very best care for your cherished feathered friends.
